Otis the Sidewinder
1963-2005
aka David Bruce Jackson
Sunday,
September 25,
2005. Our friend and pard, Otis the Sidewinder (aka Dave
Jackson), passed away today. Way too soon for those of us who
are
left behind, but all things happen according to a plan, and when it's
time,
nothing can change that plan.
Otis was an irreverent character, quick with a smile and quicker with a
joke or a comeback, but he was a friend to be counted on whenever
someone needed help. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and
recently, a cowboy shooter. In past times, he would have been
known as somewhat of a rounder, but one couldn't ask for a better man
to
ride a
trail or share a campfire with. When it comes down to it, is
that
not the best standard for success in this world? We miss you,
Otis.
A
couple of years ago, Otis and I
were sitting around having a few suds. He started talking
about
this wild bunch of guys that shot old west style pistols, rifles and
shotguns. I told him that I might be interested and went to
the
next shoot. I was immediately hooked and thought that Cowboy
Action Shooting was the most fun that an old fellow like me could have
with his clothes on (not that it mattered any more anyway).
Otis
showed me the do's and don'ts and above all, not to drop a loaded
pistol on my first stage. But that's another story.
Otis, now that you have come to the end of your trail, you enjoy
sitting under that tree and watching the rest of us. Save me
a
place and have the grill ready. You will be missed but we will
see you in the near
future.
